Re: Impromptu Games
Had fun yesterday. Great Job Grog on your plan coming together in fine fashion.
I learned something very important yesterday. When Grog says Mind the CAV on Pepes' flank it means they are 300 meters away on the other side of the hill. LOL OUCH that hurt.
Once again a great time!!!

Re: Impromptu Games
Thanks again Kevin and everyone for a great game.
Because we were able to form our line relatively unhindered, it felt much more like a set piece battle rather than an encounter, which was nice for a change.
Having a little time to study the ground and enemy dispositions was a real gift and it was nice to see a staggered advance plan come together.
As Kevin said afterwards, we were very lucky that their other division did not come to their support and I was also glad I didn't send Roland and Kevin round to the left, which I very nearly did to avoid bunching our divisions. With such a tough enemy, I doubt we would have taken the hill. Well played all.
Mike, perhaps you just need time to get used to the 'classic British understatement', as Kevin observed.
"be careful of the cavalry to your right" translates to "form square immediately, you are about to be rolled up like a Persian carpet".
"we are in a 'spot of bother' " means "we are surrounded on all sides and there's just me, the drummer boy and a drunken chaplain left"
"things are warming up round here" equates to "we have all been massacred and I am writing this message using my own entrails and my liver as a full stop (period)"

Re: Impromptu Games
This battle did have a much more napoleonic feel to it. I liked the way the AI did not commit all its troops to an attack at once. It made discrete thrusts at certain points of our line. Also it's use of cavalry was very appropriate.
Of course Morsey was destroyed, but I think most of us factor that inevitable result into our plans by now.

Grog I need to get that translator program that Digby has been bragging about in other post. LOL I kind of know 2 languages and now I am learning a 3rd British.
Kevin thanks for the compliment. LMAO!!! May a thousand fleas infest your saddle as you march across the field of battle.

Re: Impromptu Games
I think we were particularly lucky to NOT trigger any AI divisions before hands as well as not have one patrol the perimeter.... this ensured a really nicely organized fight for a change and not the usual "fight for survival"....
also we had a CinC who did not order the usual "that division over there should go and flank the enemy and attack from the rear"... or some "asymetrical" idea...

Re: Impromptu Games
I was under the impression that we were playing a Peninsula battle this weekend. If not, I can throw something together. I'll try to make it less intimidating than last week's.

Re: Impromptu Games
There are two smallish Peninsular battles to fight. One is weeny and could be a 4 to 6 player game with zero preparation, the other is also not big but needs some planning. The OOBs are written I just need to quickly build the scenarios. I have a day off work tomorrow so can throw together set-up and doodle info. We can do the small game on Friday (if we get too many players maybe someone else can run a co-op scenario)? The bigger game can be played one of the other days.

That was probably the most carefully fought HITS battle of the century last weekend.

Re: Impromptu Games
not really sure why everyone is SOOO impressed by this fight...
I mean I understand that Mark is stunned, because for once he had his team not chase the 4 corners of the map and actually thought of something militarily possible... but the rest?
Pepe really tried to stick to the mission and fullfill it... more than a draw was never an option in such a situation unless you are willing to give up your objective and HOPE to retake it after you have crushed the other half of the enemy's force - a gamble which no sane commander would ever take...
this is a moment where you call for reinforcements and stay defensive! - thus the title of the scenario was well chosen...

Isn't that what Boney did at Austerlitz?more than a draw was never an option in such a situation unless you are willing to give up your objective and HOPE to retake it after you have crushed the other half of the enemy's force - a gamble which no sane commander would ever take...

Re: Impromptu Games
nope.... afraid not...
he knew reinforcements came up from the South - which the Coalition didn't know about - this allowed him to do the rest...

Re: Impromptu Games
Since the Little Bighorn is getting so much attention here these days, thought I'd pass along that there's a new hour-long documentary/dramatization premiering this Sunday night (early Monday AM in Europe) focusing on GAC. It's entitled, "George Custer: A General's Reckoning." The previews looked interesting. It's on the Fox News Channel as part of their "Legend's & Lies" series and is scheduled to begin at 20:00 EDT in the U.S. (which translates, I believe, to 01:00 Monday morning in Britain).
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4573180/
The format, as the name of the series suggests, is to separate fact from legend & myth as to various characters of the Old West.
FNC is ubiquitous in the U.S., but for those out of the country who wish to view/stream live, there are a few options, the easiest perhaps being to download the FNC app on iTunes.

Hopefully we can now see the real Kevin revealed LOL. Sucks there is no Fox News outlet here so I can't get. If anyone finds it online please let me know.
