Guide to map making?

Hello all. I am interested in making maps but am unsure how to and where to start? What is the process and are there any short cuts? Any help would be great!

I may be able to respond at more length later before our son returns from work and reoccupies the room where my personal PC is!

Perhaps you could encourage him to share the results with us – this would allow me both to act as critic, while at the same time adding to our/my map collection!.
