Re: Impromptu Games
I like those scenarios where the plan involves standing on a big hill and killing everything that comes up at you. Most satisfying, especially when we counterattacked and the enemy lines began to melt away. I am sure that soon I will wake up and it will all have been a lovely dream.
Kevin, when you designed the scenario and placed one Prussian division far forwards at Altstedten, what did you have in mind? Just curious.

Re: Impromptu Games
I put those Prussians at Altstedten because,
1. It's a really nice, big hill to defend.
2. It is on the flank of the advancing French so they would likely attack the Prussians there and spread out the battle a bit. Von Tauenzien's division was really big so it would have been a fun fight. It might have sucked in several French divisions. If they ignored the Prussians, then there would have been an opportunity to come off the hill and attack the French.

I can play today at the usual time, 14:00 EST, 19:00 BST.
Weds. battle resulted in a Prussian victory despite an ill advised counterattack. No doubt the timely deployment of the swastika formation was the key. Today we will fight the French peasants in Italy.

I also can't do it today, guys.
But surely I will next week, if possible.
And with great pleasure.
Have fun in the meantime!

Re: Impromptu Games
And what a game it was! There was skirmishing (for the French at least), and monks chanting hymns, and brigades so large you have to wonder if the Austrians are compensating for something. I must hold a moment of silence for that unit of light infantry that got absolutely run over by two battalions of French cav. Those poor bas ds deserved a better death than that.
I'm not sure I'll make it on Sunday. Historicon is in Lancaster this weekend and I'm not sure if I'm going Sunday or not. In either case I hope you guys have a good one then.

Friday's battle was a rare victory for the 1800 Austrians. Even though the French made a very serious attempt to turn our flank, we were able to hold them and drive them back.
Today we will be Russian and play on an old random map that now populated with buildings, fortresses, bridges, etc.

I ended up dying gloriously among a huge freaking shed-load of trees instead. I am sure it was a very majestic battle, visually, but I hardly saw anything beyond my nose. I'd like a map with maybe lots of flat white stuff next time!

Sunday's battle was a very minor victory for the Russians. Although they captured the two objectives, they were unable to bring their entire corps to the Lencyzo Strasse.
We are in the height of summer, so today's battle will again be on the Richwol map. Sorry Martin. This time we'll try our luck as the French.

Re: Impromptu Games
I'd claim for a marginal brigade command again, if that doesn't put too much shame upon our Army's reputation.
But one day we need to get a "task force" mechanics working in this game.
Bypassing OOBs on occasions and to a slight degree.
So I could also claim, at the right time, for an art. section or two in order to fulfill my spectacularly irrilevant orders.

Weds. battle was an embarrassing loss for the French. Hoards of hairy Cossacks managed to keep the Grande Armee at bay. Shameful.
For some hot weather relief, today's battle will take place on a foggy, snowy field. Bring your mittens and hot borscht.

Re: Impromptu Games
Hey guys.
I'd afraid to miss that winter outing tonight and keep my Alpini's hat in the closet...
But sadly, very likely it's going to happen.
Will tell you at the last moment.
Anyway, one minor but still annoying thing I experienced on latest games happened when you click on the terrain to set a unit destination point (but probably under more circumstances).
Besides the fact the mouse picking function also seems to fail sometimes on its own (probably on some weird ground slope/horizon combinations for the raycasting algorithm)...
But the issue is until that move command is acknowledged (which depends on network latencies too, so you could get quite unpredictable responses, I guess) and you see the marker decal drawn, you won't be able to get the mouse mid-button + drag function for rotating the camera function to work.
Is that a common feeling or it's just me being slightly fussy and need to get used to it?

Re: Impromptu Games
I think you got it the other way around. One single glorious French division held the entire army of Cossacks at bay while the other divisions completely encircled the Russians.
If we're fighting in the snow I would assume it's French vs Russians again?
The whole thing can be a bit fiddly. If you're just trying to move your commander/cameraman then I've been told if you lower your camera's position by pressing either Shift or using the mouse wheel, your clicks will read more consistently. I've met with some success using this method, though it does have to unfortunate downside of making it difficult to see over hills. There are also apparently some 'footprints' of units that are occupying the space so it will alter your position to where ever may be closest I think. As for giving units/brigades orders I don't find it to be that fiddly. It tends to go where I click it, although sometimes it's hard/impossible to read the arrow.

Excellent! Maybe we can replay the Eylau game Kevin? I need a break from this oppressive sweltering heat here is humid old Blighty.
We've had 6 or even 7 players recently so maybe a PvP game is in order soon?

Re: Impromptu Games
R59
Dump Truck answered that well.
The difficulty we experience getting our mouse clicks to register and produce the direction arrow is largely due to the flag graphic which accompanies your Officer sprite. Some flags are large and some small but they are all based on rectangular dds sprite 'frame' which is transparent, except for the flag pixels, themselves.
The transparent pixels act as an invisible barrier which will block areas of terrain you are trying to click on. This becomes worse if your are at the top of your HITS vertical position. Its also worse if going up a steep slope because you naturally try to click high, which is where the flag sheet is.
I've got used to it now. If my click does not register, I lower my self down to low saddle height, then try again.
Kevin did increase the height that the flags sprites stand off the ground, recently, which I think helped a bit. I know that the Dogs of War mod has the flags suspended right up above the units and officers, presumably to help HITS play. I think they have gone too far but perhaps we could experiment further??

Re: Impromptu Games
Thanks for your exhaustive responses, guys!!!
I was rather sure there was something not matching / conflicting inside the mouse clicking events processing routine too...
And that explains a lot indeed.
Gonna see if I can work out an exe fix...
But in the meanwhile, I'll comply with your guidelines.
Thank you again.

Re: Impromptu Games
To get beyond the wall of the invisible flag frame I use the up arrow key to push my view forwards to the limit of the 10 yard HITS position. This pushes your POV out past the frame allowing you to click the terrain. I think of it a bit like sticking your head out of a window
