Odd interactions involving infantry squares Empty Odd interactions involving infantry squares

Post  Earl of Uxbridge Sat Apr 04, 2020 12:14 am

Has anyone else noticed any unusual behavior in interactions involving squares? I have observed several cases where infantry in square do not react to charging enemies (whether infantry or cavalry), but instead remain at rest until they are either routed or the enemy moves on.

I also noticed instances in which cavalry will occupy the same physical space as squares without taking damage, even though the squares appear to be engaging in melee.

Any thoughts?

Sometimes my squares choose not to shoot at cavalry right next to them. I'm not sure what that's about. Could be a moral or training issue?

Sometimes a cav unit will be inside a square because (I think) the only part of the unit that matters is a bit around the banner. The combat only happens when the banners touch.

One case involved the infantry square actually showing the "charging/melee" animation as the cavalry rode through them, without the cavalry taking any casualties.

Another case I observed today involved a British battalion in square being charged by French infantry; although they were taking losses, they did not engage in melee, and continued to lose men until surrendering.

That was because the square was not the target of the cavalry charge so there was no melee.  It's a game engine limitation.

Squares can't melee with infantry so the attacker does not receive any casualties.  Usually the unit in square will take a few casualties and then either retreat of rout.  Why they didn't do that in this situation is a mystery.  Maybe there were other French units nearby and the British had no path of retreat open to them.
