Marching in columns suddenly shift to other formation ?

Is this because I dont tc my subcommanders and they think it´s better not have another formation when travelling on road?
and if so why is it built up like this?

Is there a reason why it´s not modded out, Would formations from different countries march in assault column rather than a classic column when they travelled on the road ?

I´m just trying to understand the reasoning behind it since it does feel odd from a realistic mind from my point of perspective about this.

There are a couple reasons for troops marching down a road in something other than road column. The most common is if the enemy comes into view while troops are marching. They will change to the formation they are to take at their destination, (game engine decision). Another reason could be that the brigade was given a formation order under the Combat tab. They will then march in that formation, (player decision).

Will they change back to road column after enemy threat has passed?
Thank you for quick answer.

The road march column for cavalry is the column of squadrons. Can that be defaulted to the column of fours please Kevin?

Usually.

No, it's a shortcoming of the game engine. They will tend to use road column march for much of their moving on the battlefield. As a result we have to put up with the unrealistic road movement in order to have realistic battlefield maneuvering.
