Game Friday Jan 31th 20:30BST
I would like to retry the scenario we tried to run last Saturday. It will accommodate 6-8 division commanders and a few brigade-sized commands for newer players. It would be best if we had two people who hadn't played it as CinCs. If such people are interested, let me know and I'll send out some briefing material. We could try this out Fri. or Sat. depending on the turnout. It is a set piece nappy battle.
It may be the case that people would like to fight an ACW battle as a change of pace. Preferences?

I'm happy to play either ACW and Napoleonics. Overall my preference would be a mix - perhaps on average we could do one of each per week? My impression is that some folks have a preference for one over the other, and we want to keep everyone on board and maximise participation.
It's still early days with our regular schedule, but the lack of doodles now does make it more difficult to plan scenarios, as we don't know how many will show-up. Would be interested in people's thoughts on that.
As for this weekend, I can play CinC if needed, but would prefer a division. Can only play Saturday this week though.

For normal games, I suggest to just have some scenario ideas ready for different number of players. Even last minute changes are possible.
For more organised battles we need to know if we have enougj players for 2 sides, then the CinCs could develop a strategy before the game.

I haven't played any SoW games online, so I guess that I could be a C-in-C. Does that mean less 'direct action' for me?
I am set up for ACW at present and I can do either Friday or Saturday.
Cheers,
Richard

Yes you could if we have 6 or more players. You wouldn't have to directly command any troops, just think great tactical thoughts. But it is probably best that you get your hands dirty so you gain an appreciation of how difficult it can be to carry out the 'old man's' orders. Usually less experienced players take command of an infantry brigade which contains 4-6 regiments or battalions. With the player's perspective limited by being at ground level, it is challenging but not overwhelming. Since we play with a chain of command, the division commander will give you orders on where to deploy and help you with the practical issues of how to do that.Richard wrote:I haven't played any SoW games online, so I guess that I could be a C-in-C. Does everyone have the Antietam expansion? If so we can use one of those maps for an ACW battle. We haven't played on any of the South Mtn. maps for a while.

OK - thanks. Can you point me towards the relevant arrangements please? I have TS installed, as well as SoW of course.
Thanks ...

Courier&Maps 1.61 is the latest and greatest.
Richard, you will also need the Courier&Maps mod. If your vertical screen resolution is 1024 or greater use this one: Large Courier&Maps
If not use the small map version: Small Courier&Maps
If you do not have the Antietam expansion and wish to get it, you can purchase it here: Antietam Expansion

Re: Game Friday Jan 31th 20:30BST
I'm interested in a game tomorrow (Saturday).
This would be 12:30 PST, right?
If we have enough players, I happen to have a scenario ready to go... Briefings and all. :-)
If not that, I can come on and play whatever role needed. More interested in ACW. Not sure about Nap, as I'm unsure about my mods.

Playing your scenario would be great. What map is it on? Some of the newer players only have G'burg and none of the expansions.

I think we should encourage new players to buy the expansions, that's a good thing, right?
The Fox's Gap map from Antietam and the three Pipe Creek maps are among my favourites that NSD have produced, and we have had some great games on all of them.

Lots of waiting initially, then a long march. My Union brigade led (I believe) the eventual attack but then the whole thing crashed, after about an hour's play.
I heard that the crash occurred at my end but I have no idea why that should be. Just to be sure, I have re-installed the Couriers mod. from scratch and set XP-compatibility mode (Service Pack 3) on my Windows 8 machine. [My advice: don't get W8 - it is awful. Unfortunately I had no choice in the matter when I bought my new laptop].
Perhaps somebody has the logs somewhere and can enlighten us as to the fault.
As an aside, I subsequently installed the GCM mods. but they are currently disabled. Does that matter?

Re: Game Friday Jan 31th 20:30BST
Mitra crashed after 26 minutes and Berthier crashed about a half hour later. I don't know what is causing this recent problem. Maybe someone else should try hosting today's game.
Win8 has caused numerous crashes in GCM games. Hopefully using XP compatibility will solve the problem. Having the GCM mod installed will not cause any problems so long as it is not active.Richard wrote:I heard that the crash occurred at my end but I have no idea why that should be. Re: Game Friday Jan 31th 20:30BST
I wonder if other 'crashees' are using Win8? Maybe we should make XP, Win7 or Win8 in XP compatibility mode a requirement?
Were people running full screen or windowed? We should all be using full screen.
If its a straight client disconnect the logs show nothing, so at least no error will tell us it was a connection fault rather than a game fault.
We've only begun having these issues in the last few games haven't we? I wonder if it's NapMod161? Should we try a few ACW games to see if those are more stable?

Yesterday's game was an ACW game, so the problem is computer related.Digby wrote:We've only begun having these issues in the last few games haven't we? I wonder if it's NapMod161? Should we try a few ACW games to see if those are more stable?
No idea on what the turnout will be. Typically I would expect 6-8.

How many players does your scenario require? I have a nappy scenario that needs 6 or more.

I'm interested but I may need to install the Nap mods.
BTW, the "Topic Reply Notification" that I receive in my email shows the link as http://forum.kriegsspiel.org.uk/t968p15-game-friday-jan-31th-2030bst#8705, which is incorrect.
