Minor War Game Map - Major Wilkinson J. Shaw Empty Minor War Game Map - Major Wilkinson J. Shaw

Post  Robert A Mosher Sat May 30, 2009 8:07 pm

Just yesterday while visiting one of my local used book shops on the hunt for something else (on WWII glider ops), I discovered a map scotch taped to the window air conditioner and it turned out to be an original of the folded pocket map "Minor War Game Map" prepared by Major Wilkinson J. Shaw, 102nd Fusiliers.

There are several editions of this work available on Google Books (at least here in the US) -
The elements of modern tactics practically applied to English formations: Practically Applied to English Formations
By Wilkinson Jocelyn Shaw
Edition: 11
Published 1879
Original from Oxford University

However, none of the online pdf files appears to include the map. The map itself appears to show an imaginery English terrain at the scale of 6 inches to the mile (I Googled several of the place names and terrain features used and found nothing like the image on the map). Along the right hand side of the map as you view it is a larger general sketch map of the area surrounding the main war game map as well as general instructions on how to use the map for an umpired kriegspiel. I plan to mount the map flat using archival materials and will try to take a photo of it via digital camera to see if it can thus be shared.

As an alternative, if you scan it as multiple overlapping A4 (8x11) pages, they can be stitched together into a single item at a much higher resolution.

You can use GIMP for this, or Photoshop. I am happy to do the stitching, if you like
