Mapping software?
Anyone know of any good cartographer apps? Years ago I used the Encarta Atlas CD, but don't have a CD/DVD drive anymore.

Re: Mapping software?
I use Paint.net v.5.0.12, very simple but it covers my attempts of map making. But Gimp seems a more complete option:

Re: Mapping software?
Thanks Chorch. I do have a version of Gimp, although need to learn how to use it better!
I probably didn't phrase my initial question well. Sorry. What I'm after is a source of maps, with the ability to filter the display to include/exclude transportation links, towns/cities, rivers, hills, mountains etc. That's what the Encarta Atlas gave me at one time, so I'm hoping there is now something similar out there. Have yet to find it though
If I do, I can then use it in combination with a graphics package..........probably Gimp

Hi Martin,
I understand your needs. I don't know if this software can do what you want, but it has an
interesting section about different styles of the same map...
