Game freezing issues
Hey gents I seem to be having issues with my game freezing up on me after extended playing. I will post my log an see if someone can make any sense of it. I ended up having to force restart my computer because the game just paused an was unresponsive.

Welcome to the forum. It appears that the game did not load the command map properly. Does this problem appear every time you try to play this particular scenario? Does the problem occur on any scenario you choose or just this one? The solution may be a simple just try playing the game again.

Thanks for the welcome, I’ve been a long time lurker an have played a game with you guys in the past on your discord. Any ways the problem seems to occur on more then a few scenarios I have played. I was thinking along the same lines that maybe it was something with the scenario. I know the game doesn’t like it when you exit a battle an immediately jump into another one so I always quit an reopen the game when ever I want to start a new battle. I’ve noticed that same Popup_map.dds error every time the game ends up freezing on me. Sometimes it’s a half hour in other times it’s over in hour in when it will do it. I know bringing up the map with the N key does work just fine in those games. It’s got me baffled

That looks like you have the wrong sized mini-map. We had that issue years ago with the Gettysburg Nap Mod. I don't understand how it could still be showing now though.

I’m playing at 2560x1440. The in game settings are set to that. The ini file is set to 15. I have tried unchecking full screen thinking the same as you with the resolution. But it doesn’t seem like unchecking that option does anything it doesn’t go into a windowed mode like I thought it would. I even right clicked my desktop thinking maybe something was up there. I noticed it was set to aspect ratio instead of no scaling thinking that might of been the issue I ended up giving in last night but once I’m out of work I’ll have to double check everything again. You think it’s a resolution issue? I did want to add that I have no strange stretching or giant cursor like I have seen someone report happens when their resolution is out of wack. It’s a strange problem, I haven’t had before. I’m nervous to reinstall out of fear that I won’t be able to redownload it again off of steam because of the delisting that happened.

So I think I have figured it out. Earlier in the week I was messing around with the scenario generator and inserted the couple lines in the ini folder for the debug for startpos. I didn’t end up removing the lines after I was finished. It’s either that or turning off aspect ratio to no scaling might of also done it. Either way I played a scenario for a good hour an a half with no problems. Hopefully I have it resolved, I’m hoping to catch you guys for a game this Sunday. See you gentlemen on the battlefield.

I still seem to be having the issue with that error. I can't seem to figure out whats causing the problem. I have tried a fresh install of the game including deleting the documents folder when I did unistall. I've tried all possible settings for my display through nvidia. I'm starting to wonder if that Popup_Map.dds is corrupt or something? Or the game just doesn't like 1440 resolution. I don't remember having this issue before. I have even tried to play the game in windowed mode an completely stock with no mods. Theres def something going on with that file. Not sure if someone could post up that file through drop box an i can try that dds file. Im not sure what else to do. EDIT: I seem to have found a work around by playing the game in 1920x1080 and using aspect ratio in nvidas control panel to force it to full screen without the black bars. The only issue is that not playing in my native resolution the picture is not the best but I no longer have that error poping up. I wonder if this is a issue with that dds file and its not scaling properly for 2560x1440 not sure if any of your fellows you play with use 2560x1440 with no issues or not. Its not the greatest but I can now play for extended periods with no crashing atleast. I tried it in 1920x1440 and it seems that will throw the same error. So it appears that anything over 1920x1080 res will mess with the way the map scales and cause issues. What a bummer. EDIT 2: It appears it will also work set to 1920x1200 with no error present in the log. It seems like a norbsoft issue for sure. I dont know much about modifying dds files or if its something in the many game files that might resolve it.

So I did some scouring of the norbsoft forums and found an interesting thread. https://www.norbsoftdev.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=77915&hilit=Dds#p77915 It appears that maps are defined in the gscreens.csv file. I’m gonna do some more digging and see if I can figure something out. Once I get my mind set on something I have to figure it out haha EDIT: It seems like the gscreens.csv file is located in the Logistics folder. I notice that in the base game folder structure there is no logistics folder present except in the QB dlc folder but it only contains a unit csv file. I notice in your KS mod folder there is a Logistics folder and where all the csv files are located. I don’t wanna mess around with that one seeing as I have no idea what I’m doing. Is there a hidden folder for the base game logistics folder? Only reason for asking is I wanted to make a copy of it then change my resolution and compare the x,y values and see if they are resolution dependent.

The stock csv files are locked in a compressed file, sowwl.sow. The KS mod csv files overwrite the stock files. The dds file you are asking about is also there.
You have to remember that the sow graphics engine was made when WinXP was brand new. CRT displays were the most common type. Wide screen displays didn't exist yet. In other words, the graphics engine is a dinosaur. My wide screen monitor has a resolution of 2560x1080 which I have set the game to. It works without any issues. Yours is squarer and that ratio is not handled by the graphic engine. I'd suggest changing your monitor resolution to something that the game knows about and use that when playing the game.

Thanks for the reply. Luckily I still have my old 1080 monitor kicking around some where. I figure it is just because it’s an old game. At least I figured out a work around by playing in a smaller resolution. Strange that they even have 2560x1440 as an option. I seen norbsoft is active again and it appears they are supposedly gonna continue work on the game at so point. Hopefully they fix wide screen support. I’m looking forward to the game today I have been practicing a lot.

Sorry for the late reply.
I think that log warning should be harmless and most likely unrelated to the failure of PR to restore your D3D9 device at some point.
This should be related to your screen resolution instead and to existing leaks and bad practices on that part of the engine code.
Trying to work on that.
Would love to know if you were running your tests on a multi monitor setup too, if possible.

Hello Nicolo, I do not have a multi-monitor setup just a single display. I'm sure it's something silly in the lines of code possibly a typo but I'm no expert on modding games. I couldn't find a good link to the SDK program that is required to viewing the hidden dds file so I was not able to run some tests. I am certain you are correct that it is a resolution issue its almost like the command map and normal maps are not scaling properly not sure if its the x,y values in the file that are not setting properly or what. Playing in anything other then 2560x1440 and the game works great with no errors what so ever. Playing in my native resolution and the game will eventually freak out and crash. I noticed on the norbsoft forums the grognard toolbar was updated for higher resolution play I was going to try and dissect his files and compare them to the originals and see if I could troubleshoot the problem but haven't had the time. Thank you for the reply.

The log warning is raised when your toolbar top's Y screen coordinate exceeds that dds texture size, less a 5*2 margin (stock is 1024x1024).
But it shouldn't have any direct impact on the freezing...
I would try to play a bit with ALT+TAB to force the device being lost, see if it can be reset successfully and try noticing any correlation with the ongoing battle time and the number of times you open the map popup first.

I just started a test game with my native resolution. I used the Alt+Tab a couple of times but my game didn't crash on me which is a surprise because usually Alt tabbing is a no no with this game. I used both the shortcut keys M and N and also used the toolbar buttons for bring up the map. I also tried bring up the map after Alt tabbing. I know it can take some time for it to eventually hang up but when it does I am unable to even Alt tab out of the game to force it to shut down I have to force restart my computer in order to solve it. Its a strange problem.. I also had a look at those dds files there is one named POPUP_Command_map.dds and POPUP_Map.dds both are indeed 1024x1024. If you want I can try and just play through a game like normal and I can take notes of the times I call upon the map while I'm playing. I know that eventually it will hang up on me.
