HITS/GCM Game 9 Results: Reunion at Harrodsburg Hg_gam10

The Union scored a second consecutive victory in Kentucky defeating the Rebels under Braxton Bragg and Kirby Smith in a seesaw battle near Harrodsburg. Casualties on both sides were severe – and oddly identical – though the Federals were the clear masters of the battlefield at the end of the day:

Confederates: 12,540
Union: 12,541
Total combatants: 45,712

Battle Report: http://www.sowmp.com/gcm/battles/battle/14976

We had 19 players and 1 observer for the climactic battle that has saved that commonwealth for the Union. Players included 2 CinC’s; 8 Infantry division major generals; 1 General of Artillery (Confederate); and 8 colonels leading independent brigades.

P.S. The HG game series takes a break on March 9 so that everyone can take part in “Spartans of Harpers Ferry” – a KS HITS Western Campaign event. See you at the Ferry! http://forum.kriegsspiel.org.uk/t661-battle-time-side-roster-spartans-of-harper-s-ferry#5816

P.S.S. Anyone wishing to arrange & host a battle using the HG settings can do so by following these steps http://forum.kriegsspiel.org.uk/t656-gettysburg-game-thursday-28th-february#5758

Thanks for posting that, Davide. Sorry I missed it.

I take it this game was played with patch 1.6. What was the reaction to the changes, folks?

HG9 was played with 1.6 but in the discussion that took place afterward, my impression was that most didn't observe a great difference in game play. During the battle I noticed that our guns seemed to be more effectively blocked from firing through friendly infantry to their front, which is good. Also on the positive side: my own regiments that retreated either voluntarily or involuntarily headed properly toward my lines rather than toward the enemy's -- but the sample size isn't great, of course. Someone did comment that he saw an instance of infantry firing through friendly lines, but I didn't witness this. And these are tricky observations because of difficulty in determining where a line is partially vs completely blocked.

Not much else of note that I can recall that relates to the new patch. Some advantages & changes brought on by 1.6 are down the road and lie in opening up more game systems (e.g. artillery ammunition) to modding -- and it takes time to develop and test these.
