Borodino Map Empty Borodino Map

Hi, guys.

I am constantly getting run-time errors when using that map. It loads fine into the scenario generator and sets up fine but as soon as I transfer it to the 1.37 Mod and begin the game, within a very few moments the Run Time error appears. This normally happens when scrolling with the mouse across the map.

I have tried this with both the RM and non-RM versions of Borodino with no difference which does not surprise me at all as they both use the same .csv file.

I went looking through the KS Stock Scenarios to see if you had used the map but none of the Russian scenarios involved Borodino.

This does not happen anywhere else. I do not have a problem with the mouse while working with the Generator.

Any thoughts on this issue?

Are you using the 1.07 KS Sprite mod? Is there anything listed in the SOWWL.log file that might indicate what the problem might be?

Yes, 1.07 Sprites.

I'll load it up again and try to copy the .log file. I'll see if I can grab a screen shot of the error message, too.

Again, the only time it happens is on Borodino. That's why I wondered if you guys had used that map for one of your MP sessions?

Yes, we have played on it a number of times. There is an updated csv file for it in the discord channel downloads section. Actually the download updates all the csv files. I doubt this is the problem, though.

Here's the .log file. It actually let me go for 23 minutes before it decided to crap out on me. Again, the run time error popped up when I was scrolling across the map with the mouse. What is interesting is that the lead Russian division had advanced to contact and was being fired upon when the error happened.

I'll go looking for the updated .csv file. Can't hurt.

I don't see any errors. I tried a scenario using that map and had no problems running it. Maybe the lsl file is corrupt. Try re-downloading the supplemental maps file again.

I certainly appreciate your trying. In the interim I have made something of a two-fold discovery.

For the hell of it I took the Borodino scenario I had made and transferred it to one of the other large maps - Kelheim, in this case. It did not happen as quickly but eventually I got the same runtime error and again, while scrolling across the map with the mouse. I transferred the 10-mile German map in with a similar result....but later into the game.


Since the mouse was always involved I began to wonder if this might not be some sort of hardware problem. I use an ergomonic mouse from an outfit called Anker which is easier on the wrist than my old Microsoft mouse but I still had kept that as a backup. Reverting to the old mouse on the 10-mile map I got through 7/10s of the game before having to shut the game down for the night.

So my next - and probably final move - will be to try the Borodino map with the older mouse. Not sure if it is a graphics card problem or just some other glitch but it could be that the memory requirements of the larger map and the huge Op Force I give to the Allies might be a major part of the problem. I'll report back on the result.

Well that is certainly an interesting discovery. If the old mouse works with Borodino or Kelheim, then you've nailed the problem. Why that's the case is a mystery though. I wouldn't think the mouse stores any data in memory. Maybe it's the speed with which you fly over the map and the game engine can't keep up?

Voila.... what we have here is a failure to communicate.

Specifically, the error message given is useless. It seems to be a memory problem.

Like you, I was mystified why an old mouse would work better than a newer one so just for the hell of it I took a look at the options page. The options were all set to "Best" because my system has plenty of memory but what snagged in my mind was that some of the older games I have need something called the Large Address Aware app which is supposed to work to allow older games to utilize advanced system memory or something. It usually does but I activated it for SOWWL.exe but it didn't seem to help. Then I thought why not lower those settings and see what happens.

What happened was that the run time errors stopped and I ran through several hours worth of battle on the Borodino map without a hitch. I had dropped the uniforms to "Low" (I don't care much about that anyway ) and the buildings and map draw to medium. What I now suspect was going on was that the combined memory totals of the very large map AND the large attacking army I was using were pushing the available memory to the limit. When scrolling with the mouse if I got to another town - and it could be 1500 yards away from where I was looking - it would start to draw another feature and exceed the available memory. Instant CTD.

Anyway, right now it seems to be working fine so I'll stop screwing with it and just enjoy the Borodino map.

Glad you figured out the problem. I use a visible max of 1000 yd. And run everything at best with no problems. You might try reducing the visibility to 1000. You could also try to reduce the percentage of trees drawn to around 85%. This will also help. Uniform quality won't make any difference as the mod uses the same sprites for both low and high quality.

At some point in the next day or two I will employ the scientific method, restore the options setting and see if the problem reappears, If it does, I have my answer.
