Old Soldier

Hi Team,

Fantastic Mod, it’s obvious how much work and expertise has gone into it’s production, very well done!

I started tabletop gaming when I came out of the Army in the late sixties although I already had an early interest in Military History, becoming well and truly hooked after reading about the Battle of Thermopylae.

I’ve had the good luck to meet two of the greats, Donald Featherstone and Paddy Griffith mostly at the Northern Militaire held annually in Manchester.
Both these gentlemen sadly now gone.

The road to the present has taken me from Tabletop Gaming, Boardgames and finally Computers, a thoroughly enjoyable journey. Over the last few years I have concentrated on Napoleonic and Seven Years War History, accumulating a large collection of books and prints.

I now use a combination of Boardgames and Computers to recreate and study past battles and like to consider myself a student of Military History rather than a player.

Without doubt the Wargaming field with it’s numerous facets has apart from my family given me most pleasure, meeting and corresponding with all types of interesting characters.

So thanks again for allowing me to join your forum and I look forward to following your endeavours.

Hi Xray and thanks for those kind words. It would be good to see you join us online for a Napoleonic game when you have the time. We play usually about 4 nights a week - Friday thru Monday, though Monday is often not a Napoleonics night and can be any mod of SoW Gettysburg. We have several we play: Blenheim, Fontenoy, Custers last Stand, First Carlist War, mid-19th century fictional Kreigspiel, ACW, etc.

We have a Napoleonic Peninsular camapign on the go that's been running for about 2 years (off and on). I'm pausing it at the moment while we evaluate the new SoW Waterloo game and see how our mod develops. Currently the campaign uses the Napoleon mod for SoW Gettysburg.

I was interested to see that you knew Paddy Griffith.  Paddy was an affiliate of our group, and a friend of some group members.  Greatly missed. If you look at our website, you'll find some stuff written by him and/or featuring him as a player.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Spending a while browsing the forums you seem to have a friendly cross section of war gamers.

Martin, I’m in my seventies now and my memory is not as good as used to be but I think Paddy Griffith managed to get me a signed copy of one of David Chandlers books.

I’m more of researcher than an active participant these days, but any conflicting info you want verifying or other stuff I would be more than pleased to help. At last count I had over 1000 books.

That sounds very plausible.  They were lecturers together at Sandhurst for several years .
