Some pics from last weekend's annual Buffalo Roundup in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It's an amazing scene to watch upwards of 1,300 head of bison charging through the Hills to their annual date with the cowhands, vets, park rangers, etc. who maintain Custer State Park's publicly-owned herd.

Great photos Ron. Thanks for posting.

I know it's some way distant, but have you got any of the Little Big Horn battlefield? That's an area I plan to visit before I'm too old (which means I'll have to be quick).

Yep, the Little Bighorn is just a bit beyond the Black Hills, but in the same general direction. It's a great place to visit. Have a number of photos there that I took a number of years ago -- may post a few in a day or two if you're interested.

More people than buffaloes at the roundup. How does the herd size compare to the one in ND?

Yep, about 14k people to 1,300 buffalo. Don't have numbers on the ND bison, but believe the Black Hills herd of 1,300 is second only to the Yellowstone herds which have 3,000+ (publicly-owned that is).

@ Martin: Here are a handful of images taken at Little Bighorn Battlefield way back in 2001.
