A way to hide the HUD
Is there a way to hide the HUD? I've had a mind to make a sort of recap/trailer type deal for the campaign as a method to work on my editing abilities and maybe even drum up some new commanders. Ideally I'd like to capture a bit of B-Roll footage of some troops marching and deploying and doing general stuff to create a cinematic environment while going over the moments leading up to battle and to connect some of the highlight clips. However this would be best accomplished without a HUD if possible.

There certainly used to be a way, in game, to hide it. I think it was the G key for on/off

I have never heard of a way and I have tried numerous times with video and screenshots. Its possible it was in Gettysburg but not in Waterloo, due to the new GUI.

There is software to crop the video - so you can simply cut out HUD, it would result in non-standard aspect ratio, though (unless you cut out some of the sides, too)

Re: A way to hide the HUD
The "closebar" command can be easily fixed to allow this.
2 things actually don't allow it to unload the root MyGUI layout but just "secondary" popups like in the tutorial scenario.
The 1st one, it closes the bar on top of stack only when 2 or more layouts are present there (always keeping at least 1).
The 2nd, the "ToolBarType" userstring must be length zero / not found in .layout files (that's the system used to mark a layout as toolbar type or not, the value also indicating if it's built for SP or MP I think).
If you've the Matrix version of the exe...
Offset 0x0014CAA8:
83 F8 01
to
83 F8 00
Offset 0x0014CB62:
0F 85 9F 00 00 00
to
90 90 90 90 90 90
To show the HUD again, try loadbar:toolbar.
Backup everything first.
Cannot guarantee about stability, so please use this just for cinematics, but it seems to work.
Making this while running a replay game with sprites/effect/etc., not that garbage the game shipped with, would be even better&safer...

You lost me half way through the third line, or possibly at the end of the second....

Re: A way to hide the HUD
Summing up, the code that handles the "closebar" command actually has a couple of checks in place that prevent you to unload the last (bottom of stack) level of the MyGUI interfaces (which is always the main toolbar) and, in general, any kind of .layout where a "ToolBarType" < UserString > entry is found.
Working around these two with an hex editing tool, it can be made to serve the purpose.
Sorry for making easy things hard to understand at times.

Re: A way to hide the HUD
Hm. Well I have the Steam version so I don't know if that changes anything. Though from what I'm gathering it sounds like the problem I might have is the HUD will be off, so ordering troops around to capture their movements will be difficult if I can't toggle the HUD on to move them, and then off to film them.

Re: A way to hide the HUD
Steam version has different offsets.
Will tell you those as well (probably tomorrow or on Tuesday).
You can still drag the destination markers on terrain btw.
And, for basic commands, probably use keyboard shortcuts.

It's not a feature of SOWWL unlike SOWGB.

I have not tested it on Steam yet.
So use at your own risk.
Backup everything first.
