Scenario Generator for Scourge of War v3.0

1) Installation

1.1) Download Scenario Generator
http://www.norbsoftware.com/NSDTeam/StefanZ/^^%20SCENARIO%20GENERATOR%20^^%20v3.0%20Rel2.zip

1.2) If you have an older version of the Scenario Generator, delete its folder under Work\Scenarios now

1.3) Unzip into your Work\Scenarios Folder

1.4) In the newly created folder ^^ SCENARIO GENERATOR ^^, right-click on the file „ScenarioGenerator_v3.0.xls“, then create a shortcut

1.5) Drag the shortcut to your desktop

REQUIREMENTS
Excel (Versions 2010, 2007, 2003 and 2000 have been tested)
Excel macros must be enabled.
(Excel Macro Security Level MEDIUM recommended, so you will be asked each time if you want to enable macros)

Changelist v3.0 [Release 2]


  • New Feature: Carry-over mode.
    The carryover mode will create an adjusted OOB based on the results of a played scenario to be used by the next scenario. Note that this feature is a bit simplified but if you understand the way an OOB is structured you can very easily adjust more details manually if needed.
  • Added Red River maps, Big Whiskey, Pea Ridge, 10MileMaps and Lynchburg to the list of maps.
  • Added 10mile maps functionality.
  • Added 4 ACW OOBs with extra sprites and flags: Eastern 1863, Western, Trans-Miss and Eastern 1861. Those require the "Courier and Mini-Maps" & "Additional ACW Flags & Sprites" Mods! There are still 3 ACW OOBs which don't require any Mod.
  • Added subvariants of Waterloo OOB for the Allied side: UK-only and Prussian-only
  • Added Russia 1812 OOB
  • Note that ALL Napoleonic OOBs now require the KS Napoleon Mod to make use of the new sprites, flags and portraits!
  • Added Blenheim Grenadiers OOB (which requires Blenheim Mod)
  • Added Fontenoy OOB (which requires Fontenoy Mod)
  • Added toggle for Supply Wagons (None / 1 per division / 10 per Army)
  • Added toggle to play in Hunt em down mode (default) / Attack / Defend
  • Added functionality to give names to the 4 objectives and to place them in exactly x yards away from the sector center (x/y axis), so you can position them very detailed.
  • Added toggle for extra cohesive AI (should improve AI cavalry attacks in Napoleonic games).
  • Added a check to display duplicate custom selected units (if you select the same unit more than once, you will notice it)
  • Added a text info below map with the length of a sector (0.5, 1 or 2 miles)
  • Increased Custom OOB row limit from 1900 to 2500
  • Added a new field to enter a Title for the scenario to be displayed in the game lobby. By default, the names of the 2 armies are also displayed.
  • Increased max regiments number per brigade from 9 to 14
  • Updated Manual

  • Added Brandy Station to the list of maps.
  • Added Brandy Station minimaps for both ACW and NAP version.
  • Improved compatibility with Hays' Carryover tool


Changelist v2.0


  • New Feature: Importing User Generated OOBs. Yes, indeed: Now you can import any OOB which is in SOW layout!
  • New Feature: Hand-picking Units. You can manually pick individual Leaders and Units.
  • New Feature: Brigade placement to sectors. Besides Corps and Divisions you may now also place single brigades to sectors.
  • New Feature: Custom Random Sector Definition Sets. You can define 4 different sets of sectors, in which your Corps and Divisions can be placed randomly. This is in addition to the already existing feature of using random placements in relation to the “reference point”.
  • New Feature: Show generated OOBs for just created scenario.
  • Added an extra macro button for creating the scenario intro text (even after scenario files have been created)
  • Added a new field to define the objectives distance to the center of the sector.
  • Added a new field (Obj Holder) to set each of the 4 objectives as valid for Both sides, or only Side1, or only Side2.
  • Added a sheet where you can set your own default values to be restored.
  • Added napoleonic minimap pictures for the “KS Napoleon Mod” by MTG. They are labelled NAP... in the map list.
  • Several optimizations in the integrated Theatres of War (flags, names, extra leaders)
  • Added some more checks and tweaks
  • Updated Manual

  • Theatre of War ACW Trans-Mississippi added (Note: In Trans-Mississippi, some Cavalry brigades also include Infantry regiments)
  • Theatre of War NAP Peninsular added

  • Minimap picture for Random maps 6 (No3) corrected
  • Minimap picture for Kansas added
  • Added 4 missing units to CSA in Theatre of War ACW Eastern

Scenario Generator for Scourge of War Empty Features

2) Features

2.1) Choose a theatre of war (in v1.0 you have ACW Eastern, ACW Western, Napoleonic Italy and Napoleonic Waterloo available). Then customize both sides Order of Battle structure. Your scenario's OOB will be filled randomly by units from the chosen theatre of war.

2.2) Choose a map. Setup the starting positions of the troops and objective markers using one of 25 sectors. Or let the location be randomized in relation to the „Reference point“.

2.3) Create the scenario files with 1 click

2.4) If you want to, you can review Statistics for your scenario. Note: The statistics are only calculated AFTER you created scenario files with the macro.

2.5) Launch Scourge of War and play your scenario in Singleplayer or Multiplayer. Have fun!

This mod is awesome and I love it, but may I ask if there is a way to add maps to the generator, or if you could add randoms maps 5 to the map list.

you can already add more custom maps directly in the Scenario Generator in the workbook "Map List". It is also explained in the manual.

Yes, you can post a link of course. Although I'm not sure if the Scenario Generator is exactly what is asked by Cliometrician.
I intend to post the Scenario Generator on the NSD forum by this weekend.
I wanted to wait a week to see if some unforeseen user problems arise and to make it available on the NSD download server (not by Dropbox).

Was wondering if I could put in a request for version 2 Smile

Its more for the Napoleonic games, really.

Could there be one or two more options for brigade, division types, such as:

- Being able to choose light or Heavy cavalry
- Reserve type formations (grenadiers, Guards, heavy artillery)
- Option of 1st or 2nd rate Brigs,Divs,Corps

sure, you can put in requests as you like... cheers ...but I can't promise to implement all of them Embarassed.

In general I like to keep the Scenario Generator a (hopefully) easy-to-use tool. This tool will be enhanced of course, but it shouldn't get too complex. Maybe I will create a more complex and sophisticated variant in the future.

As an outlook for version 1.1: You will be able to see some statistics about the size and quality of your generated OOB before you launch the game. So if it doesn't please you, you can change the setup or rerun the macro.

Stefan, been looking at this today and its great. Could you add an option so that it pulls exact units/brigades out of an OOB you specify? Then it could be used for campaign battle generation as well.

This is big. The statistics enhancements have already saved a bunch of time in designing Saturday's Italian Campaign event. It is now much easier to create competitive asymmetrical battles. Thanks, Stefan!!
