Hello from another new lad Empty Hello from another new lad

Post  Grog Sat Sep 01, 2012 9:52 pm

Hello Fellas

My nickname is Grog, taken, as you might expect, from the french word grognard ( I know I don't need to explain what this word means Smile )

I'm 43, live in Nottingham-England and have been wargaming since I was a young lad playing most periods although Napoleonics has always held my fascination most.

I wargame exclusively on the PC now but I am quite interested in the concept of Kriegsspiel and would be willing to giving it a try some time.

As an clan member of NBC I have played a fair bit of multiplayer for the TW Napoleonic Mods and some Histwar MP/PBEM also.

But true to my Grognard spirit and strong leaning to simulation, I mostly play sp SOW HITS.

Although RL does not allow me much gaming time at present, I relish the prospect of playing some MP with you fellas.

I follow the SOW forums very closely and it seems to me that the Kriegsspiel HITS players offer the type of gaming experience that appeals to me.

Hopefully I can contribute something to the community

Thanks, Grog

Welcome and look forward to playing with you. Smile

The Napoleon Mod for this game may work for Multiplayer in the hopefully not so distant future *fingers crossed*.

Yes hi from me too, Grog.

Hopefully we'll see you for a G/burg MP game soon. We are a very friendly group, not especially competitive, and our games are played in a good spirit.

Nottingham's probably a bit far for our face-to-face k/spiels, but you'd be very welcome if you can make it down for the occasional one of those too.

Good to speak to you last night on TS, Grog. Sorry that we were about 20 mins into a game. Sadly after you left and after another 20 mins it crashed Sad

I'm sure we'll get together again very soon though.

Indeed, welcome. I too hope to see you on the field soon. Had my computer crashed a bit earlier, you could have joined us yesterday. It was quite a hard fight.

Thanks guys for the warm welcome.

Sorry to hear your game crashed.

It was prob best I didn't join the later game because it might have taken a bit of time for me to get set up and stuff, which might have eaten into precious gaming time being quite late, I expect, for those this side of the pond.

I will try and get in early one night, although this often proves difficult for me having two youngsters to get settled.

Not sure when my next free night will be but in the meantime, is there any possibility some kind gentleman could post a set up guide, detailing what mods, maps and settings etc would be needed to 'be good to go' ?

I'm sure all the info is out there in the forum but perhaps a sticky which is regularly updated might be useful.

Thanks fellas Smile

Hi Grog,
Not sure if this is useful to you....however there are a few of us right now on teamspeak just shooting the breeze..not yankees for a change Smile
It might be a good time to jump in to get that information first hand.
Just a thought.

Sorry. Bit slow on coming back on this. But yes we are seeing what we can do. The 3 main things you need are:

  • TeamSpeak3, a free comms programe, to allow in-game chat if 2 generals are in the same place

  • Latest G/burg game patch, currently 1.4026

  • Latest version of Uncle Billy's Couriers & Maps mod, currently 1.451

Thanks Martin

Seems like I'm good to go.

Just need to print off some maps and revise the MP lobby procedure.

There is a probability that I could be around tonight, if there is a chance of a game on. What times do you guys generally meet?

Cheers

Hi Grog

Weekdays do not seem to see much activity from the UK/Eu based part of the group, so that means we rely on the Americans to get home from work - thus a game is usually forming at midnight UK time. I shall certainly be there tonight.

On Saturdays and Sundays games tend to kick off about 19:30h UK time.

Tonight sounds like a good call Grog.i know there will be 3 of us at least, on from slightly earlier than the norm. With it being Friday always a good chance others have free'ed up some time also and will join in.
Like Digby says, weekdays can be pretty slim pickings as most dont have any free time in the working week evenings, however always worth a look if you are free as some do turn up and try to wing a battle together if possible.
Dont be put off by the "empty" teamspeak server at times tho....when it does get busy youll see plenty of folks coming and going.

Thanks Digby and Cleburne

Midnight far too late for me tonight, I'm afraid (and for most nights)

Working 12hr shifts this weekend, vainly trying to keep our sinking health service afloat, ha!( I'm a nurse )

I will enjoy an SP game tonight and keep popping my head into TS.

To be honest, I could do with a bit of SP practice. Got married recently and been pretty tied up with all that stuff, so gaming time has suffered somewhat.

Realistically, with shift work, a young family and new wife to keep entertained, I will only make the occasional game. Its good to know, though, that when opportunity knocks, I can climb on my horse, join my men and help uphold the God given rights of the Confederacy Very Happy

Now that we know you are a busy lad, we can certainly try and organise a game for you, probably mid-afternoon on a weekend or around 7:00pm in the week. Might not be a huge turnout though, but I've still had fun games with 3 or 4 players vs the AI.

Thanks Mr Digby

I appreciate your offer.

I will try to make it as early as possible in the week and will give some prior notice as to which night looks best.

Appologies for sounding so non-committal, which must sound lame to some, but through experience I have found it hard to nail down a 'night on my own' recently.

I do get time during the day some weeks which I have used for various projects. I have made a few campaign maps ( I can hex any given map using an inkscape plug in).

I'm also in the process of producing printed SOW OOB's for gameplay use(with Portraits, Flags and space for writing TC,Orders and notes etc)

I'll post more on these soon.

Cheers
