Re: YAHOO SITE
I should add that the reasons for moving are as follows:
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
- The Yahoo group is a limited format, and there has been some discontent over its limited features and restricted organisation.
- The new forum more flexible, portable and better structured.
- The new forum offers the opportunity to try new things, like PBEM on the forum.
- We could also use forum chat (which I haven't enabled but its available) to help play games.
- The new forum is linked more closely with kriegsspiel.org.uk as it lives at a sub-domain of that address.
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
Nice Look and Feel
Hi, Great looking forum and will be better than Yahoo group for tracking messages and organising content. So a step in the right direction.
Seems a tad slow to naviagate but that could be my connection?
Also we really do need a place to keep files and photo's etc...
This is where Yahoo is stronger and I am wondering if we are not going to lose a vital element of the on line community?
The ability for any member to upload files and photo's will be lost and perhaps we could try and run the two side by side? I know for the Wargames club I am involved with we have a Yahoo site set up for files and photo's while all the messages / discussion take place on the forum away from Yahoo.
I guess it all depends on the level of traffic and for our club we have far more posts evey day than we ever upload files so the forum has become the place to post and no-one posts on the yahoo messages.
Not sure myself what the answer is but I raise this as something worth discussing before we lose an element that we have at the moment.
What do other people think?

Re: YAHOO SITE
I think this is very difficult point to cover for as you say each have the uses and merits.
Running two together seems smart but in fact means people have two places to look and provide management with more to do. We need to work out how to use this one best.

Re: YAHOO SITE
I'm adamant that it is either one or the other NOT BOTH. People have got used to one way, but one that is more suitable to very low traffic. I would like to ramp up interest a bit.
I think the newsletter facility that exists in this forum would be a suitable way to prod registered users about new topics, it shouldn't be much work to bang one out 6 or more times per year, particularly when a game is coming up.
As for downloads, I don't think there is all that much on the old site, there are a few pictures of games in progress, but I think I'll create a topic here to hold pictures like that & port them over, otherwise anything decent I would like to publish on the main website & perhaps link to them as a new forum item. Give me a list of what is important to save & I'll do something about it.
The great advantages of this forum are
a) Nice organisation by category & topic
b) Flexible user permissions, which I think lends itself to organising games (or some part thererof) online
c) There is even a dice server henridecat carried out 1 launched of one D6 :
d) Inline pictures or videos (and other formatting) in a post
e) Shared administration

One forum or two
I am interested in this topic since I am involved in developing a forum myself. As I understand it, the new KS forum has loads of advantages but cannot hold downloads in the form of attachments. I entirely agree with Henri de Cat that there should only be one forum and surely there must be a way of storing downloads - I think you hold a lot on the website.
The Great War Forum allows people to insert photos (if this link works):
http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=112039&hl=River+Clyde
This is very handy and I got some excellent maps and pics for a recent trip to Gallipoli from it but I suspect the memory / bandwidth requirement is rather steep.

Storing downloads
Developing that thought; could we set up a new topic for files, photos etc? This would just provide links to the website where they could be stored.
Is that doable? Is there plenty of capacity on the website?

Re: YAHOO SITE
Images & Photos can be posted in a topic on this forum, please try it yourself, use the 'host an image' icon in the editor!
In fact much of the stuff stored on Yahoo is already somewhere on the main website, but I'm not volunteering to sort it out, the Yahoo stuff is uncatalogued & not my mess! However I transferred all of the old newsletter into pdf format, but the images are not in the documents, its all here (the old old site):
http://www.garance.plus.com/kriegsspiel/resources/archive.htm.
I should be able to host anything else on request.

I do hope I am not supposed to take that personally!
