Looking to play Empty Looking to play

Post  Mememaster Tue Jul 11, 2017 12:52 pm

Hey all, registered on the site awhile ago and downloaded the mod but never tried MP as I started playing GCM and had some things in real life that constricted time off. Reinstalled the game and did the instructions for installing the mod and setting up the options. Just a few questions, what days do game usually start and how often? Also, if I understand correctly games are played HITS with couriers between players, are couriers also used for commanding AI brigade commanders and regiments and if so is it like Gettysburg where you can command a regiment to do something normal like clicking on terrain for it to move and a courier will be auto sent from you to the regiment?

Also when I was editing the SOW .ini file I had found it to be like this.

[custom]
regstrength=100
moralelvl=0
minimap=4
plyrradius=10
ailvl=0
courierlvl=-1

The mpplyrradius was missing so I obviously could not edit it to be 10 so I just added it in like this.

[custom]
regstrength=100
moralelvl=0
minimap=4
plyrradius=10
mpplyrradius=10
ailvl=0
courierlvl=-1

Is that fine or do I need to put the mpplyrradius in a different line?

And one final question is something for a friend who might be considering buying the game to play MP, is the windows 7 problem that GCM suffers from also here as well? Or is it a Gettysburg only bug?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi Mememaster,
Welcome (back) to the forum.
Games are played on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.. usually 19.00 BST or 14.00 EST? - if you're in the states...

Games are played in HITS with couriers - yes the couriers are dispatched regardless if it's human commander or AI subordinate.

Yes, you can give normal order for a brigade and courier will be sent automatically... If you are division commander and send order to your subordinate brigade commander to change formation, you'll see upon getting your order he'll order his battalions to move/change formation by sending couriers to each battalion. Looks a bit silly with artillery when each gun has to receive order by separate courier.

Windows 7 is not a problem. I think Windows 10 was for GB? anyway, I've got Win 7 and I'm okay most of the time.

I think your set up is fine, but you don't have to worry much about that - just join us on TS and we'll get everything sorted before a battle.

Whoops! that would be an error on my part Embarassed I meant to say the Windows 10 error, not 7.

Thanks for the reply! Very helpful.

Welcome. Yes Win10 works with our MP games. We have at least one player has who used it for more than a year without any problems. It is also compatible with SOWGB. I think the problem people have at GCM is the GCM software itself. It is probably using drivers and coding long out of date. If everyone turned that off, you'd all be able to play.

Hi Meme and welcome back. here are the relevant sections of my SoWWL.ini file:

[custom]
regstrength=100
moralelvl=0
minimap=4
ailvl=0
mpminimap=4
mpcourierlvl=4
courierlvl=4
plyrradius=10
mpplyrradius=10

[debug]
alphaomega=0
drawtiles=0
autogamedb=1
dbglvl=2
mplog=1
noai=0

Don't worry about the [debug] section for now but you'll find it useful to have it there if/when you decide to begin making scenarios or other testing/modding.

Our Sunday game starts an hour later than the other days at 20:00 BST. If you cannot make these times/days let us know what your timezone is and when you can play. I am sure we can work something out as several of us are in the USA timezones and retired so we can be flexible.

We will have a game today at 14:00 EST, 19:00 BST. You are most welcome to join us. Try to come on TS about 15 minutes before then so you can download the latest files and we can check that you can join an MP game. It's usually best to start by taking command of a brigade until you are comfortable with HITS and MP play.

Looking to play Empty The Battle of Lerida

Post  Didz Thu Jul 13, 2017 8:20 am

Thank you so much for last nights game. Despite allowing that Spaniard to get my Brigade massacred I really enjoyed myself, even when I died.

I posted a few screenshots on the Steam Forum last night, and they have already attracted some interest from a Japanese player who want to know how to get the mod and join in the game. I'll finish off the community guide today and get it published so that the steam members know where to come. bounce

Good news and pleased you enjoyed it. You'll be pleased to know that in your very first game you achieved the honoured status of "those who ended a battle with only a single battalion of their command left". You've achieved this for a brigade commander but the truly exalted of this elite group start with a division, so you've a way to go yet.

EDIT: Have you a link to your screenshots please?

In my defense, I did say close with those batteries before they turn their attention to you. But in typical British fashion, you stopped for afternoon tea and crumpets. Shocked

I think you'll find that I stopped to save a Spanish battalion which was having a hard time coping with a French column.  Having flanked it and sent it packing, I then found they had friends on horses intent of taking revenge and had to form square to see them off.  It was indeed unfortunate that the French guns were not alone, and were in fact supporting a mass of other troops, otherwise I would have been able to give them my full undivided attention.

i was also puzzled why when I seemed to be keeping the entire French army occupied the regiment of cavalry to my rear might not have taken the guns out for you.  They are after all faster on the feet than the PBI.  Was it their siesta time or something?

The Battle for Lerida - Multi-player Co-Op (KS Mod)

I think its also worth adding on a more general note, that whilst there is ample evidence of soldiers with Baker rifles picking off French gunners and putting them to rout, the circumstances was somewhat different in the historical situations.

Firstly because historically it was always the gunners had made the mistake of trying to deploy too close to the riflemen, having not realised that they were armed with Baker rifles, therefore they were shot before they could deploy, and the riflemen were able to lie down or take cover and wait for them to come within range rather than walk half a mile under artillery fire to get in range.

Secondly, although in theory French artillery could fire heavy canister/grape at ranges up to 700 metres the practical reality is that the small number of canister rounds they had available in their coffret's made it prudent not to waste it on targets as unrewarding as scattered skirmishers who would throw themselves flat as soon as the gun was fired anyway.

Indeed Mercer at Waterloo flatly refused to waste any effort or ammunition firing at the French skirmishers harassing his battery even though they were just the other side of the roadway behind which his guns were sheltered and less than 30 feet away. Instead he decided to steady his men by parading up and down the road on his horse inviting the French to take pot shots at him.

Unfortunately, the AI artillery seems to have no such qualms about wasting its ammunition on scattered targets so my men were taking a right royal pounding and unable to take any cover as they had to advance to get in range.

The guns make anything within 150 yd. a high priority target. Nobody gets to shoot the battery to pieces for free. Charging the guns with multiple battalions or attacking it in the flank are the only practical ways for infantry to take out the guns.

You expected someone to sacrifice top notch horseflesh instead of a few British riflemen? Clearly your new commander, Gen. Molina, has some reeducating to do. Rolling Eyes

I actually think its the cavalry's job to deal with the artillery, what other use do they have, and the French seem able to do it so why not the Spanish. Razz

The primary role of cavalry is to look pretty and not get their boots dusty. They usually like to deploy well to the rear of the army so they may eat, drink and gossip away from the noise and bother of the battle.
