I grabbed this pic recently while testing a game. The units are marching along the same road. I think Poms sprites could do with being reduced in height 5%-10%

Didn't someone mention some other huge sprites recently? Was it the Scots Greys?

You're right that lots of the sprites are to a slightly different scale. One particularly large one is the British light dragoon sprite imported from TCM2. The scale is easily adjusted in Column D in unitpack.csv.

That's good to know it's a simple fix. This Monday's game I saw the Scots Greys beyond some British artillery, & they were HUGE GIANTS. It's a neat thing to have heavy cav a little oversized, but that was overkill.

Bear in mind that some sprites do not sit close to the ground. I have seen cavalry and artillery do this and it makes them look huge, but they are not. The perspective of 2D images on a 3D background can be pretty strange sometimes.

Are the winter sprites too big, or the Russian sprites too small? This is a problem when different people contribute their work. Within limits, the sizes can be adjusted as Martin said. I've adjusted the Scots Grays. Would someone like to take a crack at the others?

Given that we have fewer sprites by Pom it makes sense to make his smaller rather than all the ex-TC2M ones bigger.

Does each player see sprites of the size he sets in his own files or are sprite display sizes determined by the MP host?

Unitpack is one of the few files that is not distributed by the host at game time. However, I don't know what would happen if players had different versions. Perhaps nothing, perhaps a crash. It's not a file that sees many changes. Since version 1.22 can be released soon, now would be a good time to adjust the sprite sizes. That way we will all have the same file.

I know you've always had the heavy cav of all nations scaled up and with a fairly good reason but some of the sizes seem overdone, the French cuirassiers for one. Could the heavy cav all be scaled back a bit please?

Apart from Pom's infantry which look like they could use a 5% reduction I cannot think of any others. All the imported TC2M inf and arty have always looked okay to me.

Is there a sprite width setting? I always thought the TC2M sprites could use a little more meat on them, they are pretty skinny.

The other visual biggie that bugs the heck out of me is the floating vegetation and sunken sprites. I know these must be related. Is there a solution? Maybe unpacking all the old GB vegetation so its in the same format as the WL stuff? Or can the WL stuff be packed? It would be a real bonus to fix this problem.

The unitpack file must match between all players or you will end up with the frame mismatch error and subsequent game crash.

As a shortcut, create a new class in unitglobal.csv, and populate the 'uniform' columns with 6 different sprites. When the regiment displays, it will be immediately apparent what degree of re-sizing is necessary, and for which sprites.

Sprite Height Empty I´m sorry my ignorance, but wasn´t Grenadiers big burly men above the average height ?

Post  ushiri Wed Dec 21, 2016 10:19 am

Good evening good people.

From what I have read the grenadiers where big burly men standing taller than the average man.
I played lots of napoleonic games both digital and analog and it seems nobody seems to take note of
this ( except Victrix ).

So my question is is it hard to change sprite size in the basegame or in kriegspiele by myself or
will it be perhaps taken into account into a following release of kriegspieler mod, if not what is
the reason for it not being introduced ?

And at a Victrix box of French line infantry 1807-1812

You can adjust the sprite size by changing the value in column D of unitpack.csv. For the KS mod, it is in the KS Napoleon Mod II/logistics folder.

Would this file need to be the same for all players in an MP game, or is it a client-side file the game does not care about over the network?

I've never tried a game with different versions, but I imagine it does have to be the same for everyone.

I read earlier what was said about samesized file, but if I just change a number to
another number for the size, the actual file would be the same size as before.
I mean if its clientside it would work.

Noone agrees that it would add a bit of realism if it is like written about the grenadiers where overall standing taller?

Grenadiers officially were the tallest men as likewise the light infantry company were the smallest but in war the rules tend to get bent a little after a while on campaign. For various tactical reasons it seems that battalions tried to keep the two flank companies (grenadiers and light troops) up to strength as both were needed to be near full strength for special duties. As you can imagine, after a battle or two, or a few weeks campaigning, there were losses and many men would be drafted into these two companies from the centre companies, thus the height difference could quite quickly be eroded.

As the game also mixes grenadier uniformed-sprites in with the others and there is no actual grenadier company depicted in a battalion, whether it is formed in line or column, the height difference is really lost, so in my view it is a change not worth making.

About the only sprite height change we deliberately made in the KS Mod was to make heavy cavalry sprites a little bigger as these men were big and rode the bigger horses. With a whole unit of bigger horses the effect is noticeable.
