Metz Map and Waterloo Map Soon Available
Gentlemen, I am very pleased to say that the Waterloo Map, on some eight sheets of A3 paper, will soon be available in hard copy. This strikes me as an excellent opportunity for new gamers to get hold of a reasonably priced map rather than having to go for the Meckel Map from the outset. Price here is looking like being £7.00 for the hard copy.
The Metz Map is quite a different animal. At 100 sheets in size this is going to be really problematic to get produced as a hard copy simply due to printing costs. As such it is my intent to make this available on CD initially with a Special Order option for hard copies. The Special Order will be based on us getting thirty (probably, I'll need to see how kind the printer will be with a small order) people who want hard copies, and once we reach that number we can get them printed. At double the size of Koniggratz this will probably be around £50.00 each, however that will give you enough maps to wallpaper an average size house!
I'd be interested in any feedback or ideas about this.
Regards
Richard

Re: Metz Map and Waterloo Map Soon Available
Right Gentlemen, after James' overwhelming response, I am pleased to be able to inform those Kriegsspielers among us, or indeed those interested in the Franco-Prussian War, the Metz map is now available on CD from the TooFatLardies web store.
This is truly a monster of a map, with 100 sheets of A3 on the main map and four further sheets giving detailed overviews of the four quarters of the area covered. With dimensions of over 10' by 9' this huge map is based on the Prussian Army 1872 survey and covers a whopping 220 square miles. In that area are the battlefields of Borny-Columbey, Gravelotte-St Privat, and part of Mars-le-Tour as well as the fortress itself, its outlying forts and the German siege lines.
Designed for Kriegsspiel it is in full colour and is now available on CD for £17.00 as an introductory offer. It is a huge 350MB so we can't download from the web site without crashing most of the UK wargames web traders, so it's CD only at present. We do hope to go for hard copy, but this will depend on sufficient people registering an interest and then the cost is liable to be approaching £50 for what will be a very high quality product with almost unlimted playing space for kriegsspiel.
Regards
Richard

Good to see the Metz map back in publication. It's a terrific map for k/spiels at both detachment & army level.
The colouring is done by Bill Leeson, who is an accomplished artist, as well as the founder of our group. A work of art

Re: Metz Map and Waterloo Map Soon Available
And more good news. I have just got back from the Printers where I have given the OK to the hard copy Waterloo Map, so that should be with us in about two weeks time.
Now we have the Meckel Map, the Koniggratz map and the Waterloo map in hard copy, and the Metz map on CD. All we need now is to find people to buy them!

I fear they will never be top sellers but in the long term you have done tremendous work for the KS community, and we are trying to get the youngsters into the method to help with future sales.
I dropped Martin's youngest off after the last game and him and his mates (all just starting Uni) were talking about doing a Zombie KS based upon maps of their school.
So maybe in a few years we will have them working on something a little more historical.
Also maybe a side line for you Richard? Zombie KS

The zombies game idea was still in his mind over dinner. A strong 'Shaun of the Dead' theme, with baseball bats as the anti-zombie weapon of choice. The zombies would be umpire-controlled, and players would be individual students.
It actually sounded quite fun to me too. Discussion became ever more surreal. We had the idea that some of the stricter teachers would appear from time to time, and throw a spanner in the works - eg by ordering any players in that classroom to put down their baseball bats and report to the headmaster.

LOL! Sounds like great fun. I have a wall-map of 1970's St Albans that the local council were chucking out many years ago and I rescued with the idea of doing some kind of map game based on civil disturbance, perhaps zombies would be a better idea.

If not I will direct him here.
Seriously it is a cracking idea and can be done quite easily if you have a good map.
Mobs of Zombies being controlled by evil forces.
The hard pressed good folk of St Albans defending vital institutions such as the local pubs and local takeaway food shops.
You could even do a Cold War scenario based upon a Russian Invasion of St Albans.

Re: Metz Map and Waterloo Map Soon Available
Sadly no. The current map is nevertheless enormous (100 A3 sheets), and several of the 1870 battlefields around Metz are included.
The modern version is based on several smaller maps produced for a 19th C Prussian staff study after the FPW. These were not intended for use in a study of the 1870 battles, but rather as part of a training manual for junior and middle-ranking officers. Hypothetical situations were set on various sectors, and the students' task was to develop appropriate plans. Given that, I would guess that extending it further to the west to cover Mars la Tour was not felt necessary.
