Sudan Mapping- Any ideas ? Empty Sudan Mapping- Any ideas ?

Hi
I have just taken the plunge with Kriegsspiel and was looking to try a Gordon relief expedition type game. As a complete newb, I was wondering if anyone could advise on maps- the best scales etc. The idea would be to give the relief column to the players and then have them make their decisions, with the umpire taking the role of the Dervish, the besieging forces at Khartoum. I would use some of the ideas contained in Science vs pluck plus anything else I can loot !
Iam based in Egham and would be looking for players too. No idea of timescale as yet.
All the best

With maps anything goes and you could even hand draw something.

The latest game was played on a very elegant simple hand drawn map of a valley based in India and it worked very well.

Depending on the nature of the game you could even use something like google earth?

IMO the key choice is what you will use to represent units on the master map and how they will relate to the landscape shown. It does not need to be in perfect scale but to look right for what is being represented.

Thanks for that, I just wish I could draw! I agree that the look of the mapping is vital.

There are a few useful maps here
http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/sudan.html

You might consider getting a copy of Churchills 'River War', which has fairly detailed maps of the actions/battles
http://www.amazon.co.uk/River-War-Account-Reconquest-Sudan/dp/0486447855

or for the Sudanese perspective 'Karari' (but with less good maps).
