Re: Impromptu Games
Yes, I got the links. He made some interesting points, but I think it is universally held that he completely mismanaged the battle. This may have been his own tactical incompetence, or it may be a reflection of the lack of staff in the Union Army. No army, North or South, had any staff of the quality and numbers that an average French division had 50 years earlier. It is why many battles in the ACW were so badly fought, I'm sure.

Re: Impromptu Games
Actually the rate of fatigue for cavalry was reduced several months ago. It hasn't been changed since. They will tire less when running, but more when charging and in melee. We ran into lots of problems. We got the bad frame crash twice. I had 2 Cossack regiments walk along roads for 30 minutes and become exhausted (completely exhausted). Several players found that infantry fell back from firefights very easily and in some cases units in reserve fell back when they were not even engaged. It feels like the infantry now has the "go back and find a safer spot" logic that the cavalry uses when its left standing under artillery fire.
The infantry doesn't use the cavalry logic at all. They are completely separate parts of the program. The changes I've been making lately are to rewrite the existing code in a form that makes more logical sense. I've added almost none of my own. Some parts of the old code were never accessible when run. I cleaned that up so it may be that some of that needs to be changed or deleted.
When we played as 1809 Austrians, we didn't experience problems, so it may be that some of the values in the 1807 OOB need to be changed.

Re: Impromptu Games
My Cossacks had the same problem as Martin's did. Just normal movement and they were wore out.
Infantry acted well unseasoned Spaniards.

Re: Impromptu Games
I don't think we have ever had these problems with 1807 Russians before. The French also seemed very skittish.
When I said it seemed like the infantry were responding the way cavalry does to fire I was just using an analogy. I am sure the code is quite different, but it *felt* like some infantry stood in reserve were moving away from threats when I have never seen this behaviour before. I highlighted it in the Austrian game on the Meckel map when about half of Phils fresh brigade made a rearwards run move because a cavalry melee took place near them.
I've never seen anything like that before.
Could it be the new flank threat code having unusual effects?

Glad to hear that not all the problems I seemed to be having last week were imagined. As I said at the time the distinct impression i got was that I was herding a bunch of duckling around the map rather than leading a brigade of elite Russian Grenadiers.

Re: Impromptu Games
We had another game tonight with a lot more unexplained running away without serious casualties (and in a couple of cases without ANY). We agreed there was a fault. Kevin has corrected it and issued a new dll. This happened part way through the game tonight and after the restart with the new .dll I personally saw no further problems. It is always best though to TC any unit if you need to manoeuvre at close range across the enemy's front. Tonight I had to make just such a march and made sure to keep well away from the enemy but even then I had to TC all my guns eventually to keep them moving.
You should play on Wednesday, hopefully you'll see the change.

Re: Impromptu Games
I can play today at the usual time, 14:00 EST, 19:00 BST. Due to the general wailing and rending of garments over the notion of no new dll today, I have relented and will provide one.

Re: Impromptu Games
If there's a game today, are you ok to start later - 19.30 or even 20.00 BST?

Re: Impromptu Games
I can play today. A later start time is fine with me. Shall we say 15:00 EST, 20:00 BST? I can sweeten that with the offer of a new dll.

I have 2 as well, one of each flavour.
Good idea that everyone downloads the new Portugal PPT map which they use, just in case we play one of them. The new map is in the Portugal_PPT folder of the maps folder of Dropbox.

And what are you relenting on?
Making things worse then they were?

Re: Impromptu Games
I think the change note for this dll includes:
- unlock Miko's guns when fighting on the same side as Kevin
- half the edged weapon for Digby's cavalry if on opposite side to Kevin
- make sure that Phil's/Mike's infantry don't form square regardless of the side
etc...

I can play today at the usual time, 14:00 EST, 19:00 BST. With enough abject begging, I might be induced to provide a new dll.
