2012 Events

Post  hammurabi70 on Wed Jun 01, 2011 12:57 pm

I know we still have the autumn programme to go but I just thought I would make a point now of suggesting we do something on Sunday after SALUTE 2012, assuming people will be OK with the idea of a 'heavy' weekend - if you go to both.

The suggestion was made here:
http://forum.kriegsspiel.org.uk/t127-anxious-to-hear-the-thunder-of-artillery
that folk from out of the south-east England could get a full weekend of action.

SALUTE will be on 21 April 2012.

Good point. Also in the past we have sometimes fixed games on the same day as Salute, which was not a particularly clever move.

Also, there are two 200ths to consider for 2012/1812:
(1) War of 1812 - time to burn Washington again What a Face
(2) Napoleon's invasion of Russia Evil or Very Mad

It would be good if one or both of these got covered by a game during 1812.

Maybe we could do it during 2012 Laughing

I had a quick look on Wiki for the year & some other possibilities are...

Game about Luddite attack on wool processing factory
Battle of Salamanca
Battle of Queenston Heights (see piccy)

Just a reminder that our next game is on Sunday 4th September at our usual venue at the village hall in Little Gaddesden village, a few miles N of Hemel Hempstead.

The game is set inthe Pacific in late World War 2. The US Island hopping campaign is moving inexorably closer to the Japanese mainland. As it does so the fighting becomes ever more ferocious.

Players will take the roles of Corps and Divisional commanders with critical decisions to make. When will operational casualties outweigh the need for strategic success?

Full briefings will take place just before the day for senior commanders and on the day for others.

Looks like we will have a good turn-out, but could still fit more in if you are interested and haven't yet contacted me.

err ... shouldn't this be in the 2011 events thread for the current year rather than 2012 events for next year?

As well as games in October (23rd) and November 2011 (date tba), we are looking at running games in February, March & April 2012. More details shortly.

Are there any 2012 dates we shoulds be avoiding? Eg Salute.

Ones that come to mind are Triples, Colours, and Salute; no doubt others would want to be added but these I have always thought of these as the big three.

There will be the general activity category such as the Olympics (in the 'summer break').

Thanks. I'll make sure we avoid those.

We normally steer clear of the summer anyway, as folks like to be outside.

Looks like Salute is 21 April, Tripples 19/20 May and Colours is not until Sep. We'll avoid those and I'll hope to post some dates and game subjects sometime next week.

Re: 2012 Events

Right, we now have several 2012 dates booked, and some idea of subjects:

  • Saturday 18 February - Western Front 1944, post the break-out from Normandy. Allied forces are heading for the German frontier..........

  • Sunday 4 March 2012 - scenario tba, see below

  • Sunday 15 April 2012 - scenario tba, see below

I'll be running either the March or April game, and plan to do a new scenario for one of the following, both of which have been run successfully before:

(a) English Civil War campaign, possibly set in southern England in 1643 or 1644 - players will each command an army operating in one part of the country. Battles will be fought using a 30-minute module, and the campaign will then resume. When a battle take place, the relevant army commander decides on how to deploy the army, but his team-mates will temporarily give up there own commands and take charge of one part of the battlefield (eg. centre or cavalry wing). This avoids them sitting on their hands while the campaign pauses. As turns will be weekly, the fact that players from other areas will immediately know the result of the battle will not be a problem, as such news would have travelled pretty fast. OR

(b) Late 19th or WW1 naval campaign - this one is more of a committee game, with each team comprising a commander-in-chief, an intelligence chief, and one or two fleet admirals. The teams plan their operations for the forthcoming turn together. The intelligence chief receives agent reports and decides what is reliable and is to be shared with the team. The C in C makes the final decision of what operations to mount (eg. patrol, raiding, mine laying, support for amphibious landings). If a squadron or fleet is ordered on a mission, the C in C nominates one of the fleet admirals to command each group of ships sent. If combat ensues, that player will then take all tactical decisions away from his team. Each player therefore has a specific role for additional interest. It also prevents any one player dominating discussion.

Would be interested to have some feedback on which of (a) or (b) potential attendees would find most appealing.

They all look excellent ideas that would get my attention. I love you bounce

Wish I had more time to follow through on some design ideas.

Here's the latest plan...........

•Saturday 18 February - set in France in 1944, after the break-out from Normandy. The Allied divisions fan-out heading through eastern France & Belgium for the German border. The Germans desparately try and cobble together a defence.

•Sunday 4 March 2012 - probably an English Civil War campaign.

•Sunday 15 April 2012 - possibly a hypothetical battle during the 1809 campaign on the Danube between France & Austria (if Paul is willing). We normally have quite a high turn-out for the April game as 5 regulars come back for their university hols.

Who is running this one? Sounds like something Rich from 2FL ran for his group some time ago? Should be fun and a great subject matter....

Hi Callum, welcome to the forum and there is really nothing to learn to get involved. If you attend a session at the location near Hemel all you need is yourself and the ability to think / communicate what you want your troops to do. The game is all under the hood and run by the person who has designed the session.

If you want to see how it works from an umpire POV then each game is different and the rules will vary from game to game depending on who is running it and what time period is involved.

Best for you to just turn up (free for first session) and take your pick of playing or umpiring. Best to let people know before hand that you are coming as designing games need to know numbers of players and umpires...

I hope this helps a little. You will really get a better idea of it all by turning up if you can?

You'll be very welcome.

You can also check out the k/spiel rules & maps sold by TooFatLardies. These are new editions of the 19th C Prussian game originally published by Bill Leeson. We often use this stuff for horse & musket/rifle era games.
