In lieu of that I tried the Scenario Generator and it seems to work well enough but the game is now crashing in mid-battle.  It has the feel of a sprite problem but has anyone else run into that?

In general, I have found KS and SOW:WL to be quite stable.

The scenario generator uses the OOBs and maps from the KS mod. If that is done then there shouldn't be any crashes. What OOB and map did you select?

The OOB_SB_KS_NAP_Prussia_1806 and the Nap_Spain_Rio_Espanol map.

At times the sides meet and it crashes right away.... at other times they can fight for a while and then crash.

Can you attach the sowwl.log file from one of these crashed games which is found at My Documents/SoWWL?

I don't see an option to attach a file but here it is:

You are missing some sprites. Either some files in the Supplemental Sprites mod or csv files in the Napoleon mod have become corrupted. I'd suggest reinstalling those two parts of the mod.

The problem is all those "Error: unknown packed sprite" lines. I have never seen those sprite names with the last letters on them so this looks like a corrupt install.

Taking the first few rows as an example we use a Nassau Fusilier sprite which is named "NAS_FUS" and an Orange-Nassau Fusilier sprite which is named "ONAS_FUS" but those extra characters on the end - W S L A F etc - should not be there. These sprite names will definitely crash the game and the crash happens part way through sometimes as this would be the first time the game calls for them to be displayed on the screen - it can't so it crashes at that point. Sometimes this is at the very start of a battle if those sprites are on-screen straight away, sometimes its later on when they march into view.

Kevin - can you say where those sprite names have come from?

They describe the different actions the sprites perform. You'll find them in unitpack.csv.

Okay, that seems to have done the trick.

Now that you mentioned it, I recalled when I first extracted those files there was one file which reported some errors. I couldn't recall which one so I downloaded them all again. Even though the download for the sprites file seemed to take forever when it extracted there were no problems and I replaced that file first and tried it out. Everything seems to work so that must have been the problem.

At first I thought that the game seemed somewhat temperamental but on reflection I realize that the initial attempts with it were all using the 1809 Austrian OOB and when I started moving to some later OOBs the problem crept in. As you say, I probably had simply not called for the game to seek the particular sprite which was corrupted.

Once again, thanks for your assistance.

Ever since I got the sprite problem settled I am having trouble with the maps. This seems strange because obviously these are separate files.

Anyway, many of the maps offered by the Scenario Generator are crashing with a level not found error.  I have read where this is the result of not having the right map file so I carefully noted the files used.

For a test I used the OOB_SB_FullFrench and the Nap_Ger_FBSC.  As expected, the game crashed immediately and the error message on the screen said "Level Not Found" but also at the top of the box named the file FBSC.lsl as seen here:

Rather than simply delete the map files and re-download it I figured I'd ask.

The mod includes a lot of maps that come with the game "Gettysburg" and its add-ons. These won't work unless you have that game and add-ons. The map "Nap_Ger_FBSC" is one of those.

If you are a Gettysburg owner there are instructions in the Supplemental Maps Mod that advise how to get these working.

We included many GB maps because the KS Nap Mod was originally made for GB and we ported it over, with extra tweaks, when WL was released. Our MP group still plays on the GB maps fairly frequently which is why they are referenced by the mod.

As a matter of fact I do have the Anniversary Edition of SOW which includes all the ACW games. Do you mean that or the KS Gettsyburg game?

I am not sure which add-on packs were included in the 150 Ani edition. FBSC is a map from the Chancellorsville game. This was originally a GB add-on pack but Matrix later marketed it as a stand-alone game.

Have you set up the mini mod that is recommended in the Supplemental Maps instructions?

Create a folder within your Waterloo Mods folder called "KS GB Maps".

Within that create a folder called "Maps".

Go to your SoW Gettysburg/Maps folder and copy from there all the .lsl files into your new Maps folder of the "KS GB Maps" mod.

Activate the mod last in the list of KS Mods.

Play on any GB map that you own!

I have been doing MP with my son in New York and both of us are learning. Perhaps some day soon.

HITS still seems rather intimidating!

I'd suggest playing with limited camera first (about 200 yards) with small formations, and with Couriers on. Once you feel comfy with that, jumping into HITS won't be a big deal.

That's a good idea. Maybe when we master the basics we can try that.
