KS Napoleon Game, Sunday 23rd August 1809 Sunday%2023rd

Feldmarschall Bellegarde, (you set up your HQ near Klenau's Division - he has the best wine in his baggage train)

The past few days have been highly interesting. As you advance into Bavaria you have received more and more reports that several large French forces were converging on your position. You have informed Archduke Charles about your situation, but have yet to receive an answer.
As the morning mist disappears your forward patrols report a large French Corps BEHIND you in the South-East. Rumour has it that no other than Maréchal Davout is in command!

The time to act is now! If you don't deal with these troops almost in a position to block your LOCs you will be cut off and most likely forced to surrender. You are in a bit of a predicament however, since you are unsure whether more Frogs are arriving from the west or not!
Therefore, I urge you to be prudent with your forces, NOT to expend all your artillery ammunition, as you might be faced with another battle in a few days. The problem with that is that if there are more Frogs to the west, you will need your artillery and since not even a courier managed to reach you from Archduke Charles and HQ it is highly doubtful that a supply train will!

The Mission:

Seek out and destroy the French forces on the map - reported to be somewhere to the SE. Capture the Objective to ensure that your Lines of Communications are secured.

We will require 5 Players minimum
Doodle Sign-Up

Victory conditions:

Decisive Victory: Destroy all French forces and capture the objective without using more than 50% of your artillery reserve and 50% of your heavy cavalry
Tactical Victory: Destroy all French forces and capture the objective
Minor Victory: Capture the objective and drive off the French towards the West.

Will be there (preferring an infantry bde or div command). It is clear these Austrians, per usual, have gotten themselves into quite a pickle and will need all the help they can get flattening this soufflé. If you're looking for a large turnout, perhaps we should post "Help Wanted" ads on the GCM and NSD sites? Cool

Did Davout bring along any of his silver flatware? Perhaps a few shiny trinkets from the sacking of Vienna? I'm afraid I require more than schnitzels and strudel.

I believe the "Iron Marshal" is above the acquisition of such mundane things... BUT one of his subordinates: GdD Gudin is known for his many appetites... including a fine selection of rare minerals he brought with him from Egypt!

I had made a scenario for tomorrow, and guessing who the commander might be, we play the Austrians as well, so I will schedule it for next friday August 30th. And tomorrow we can play the British-Pereira affair or the Battle for the Friedland Strasse with the Prince of Orange.

Not at all Roland, just a coincidence. I designed it so you had no excuse to be CinC.

I don't mind to play mine next sunday, and we try different things. Those two battles with the British look great and we haven't done more than an hour, and you missed them so a new fresh plan will be welcome if it is OK for everyone.

I had a chance to study this scenario, talk to my brigade and have the following questions on behalf of the men:

1. When you talk about attacking at "dawn" I assume you mean after breakfast, right?
2. Search and Destroy sounds a bit harsh. Will it be okay to Search for a bit and then eat lunch and then do some more searching?
3. What if the French suspect that we are searching for them? If we stopped searching would that therefore give us the element of surprise? Or maybe could we search from, say, Vienna?
4. how much of this falls under our health insurance?

Just trying to clarify things for my boys.

I'm going to need cash up front. If there are no baggage wagons to plunder I'd just as soon go looking for a more lucrative target. The Iron Duke can keep his sackcloth and ashes.

come to think of it - there was this letter from Morand to his wife back in Paris... he mentioned having found some hidden stash belonging to the 2nd Cousin of the 3rd Duke of Saxony - twice removed... it mentions certain "items".... it may be what you are looking for, Gen Georgia von Treasuria!

I've heard that rumour about the 3rd Duke. It is said that these "items" are his collection of antique re-usable pigskin French letters. All second hand of course, but each comes with an indisputable provenance from one of the blue-blooded houses of the Empire.

Post  WJPalmer Sun Aug 23, 2015 2:56 pm

You have informed Archduke Charles about your situation, but have yet to receive an answer.
He's probably just busy out and about doing Archduke stuff. No worries.

Here in America where there is no royalty (in fact, titles of nobility are specifically prohibited in Article I, sections 9 & 10 of the Constitution), we are nonetheless fascinated by royal houses and titles from around the world. I've always wondered, for instance, how the various dukes stack up versus one another. No doubt an "archduke" like Charles outranks a mere duke, such as Wellington. But how does he rate versus a grand duke? Does it matter that these grand duke characters tend to be either Russians or Luxembourgers? And how do the various archdukes decide who bows first to whom? e.g. Charles vs John? A seniority thing, perhaps? All very confusing. So much so, that I may be forced to ponder later while visiting Golden Archesduke McDonald down the road, who somehow continues to flaunt constitutional prohibitions.

Looking forward to today's battle. Hoping we get a few stray GCM'ers to stop by in addition to official Doodlers.
