Re: Napoleonic HITS Game March 14-15
Order by courier sounds more cumbersome that it is. It takes some getting used to, but once the locations of the orders in the menus are internalized, it really goes fast, and you can whip those orders out in no time at all. I probably use courier orders for half my commands, limiting point & click to close combat situations. One big advantage it has is in being able to combine several commands in one courier (think of the efficiency savings for your messengers -- and their horses!) ;-). Seriously, it's addictive (and fun) to do it this way. It's really a game within a game, and brings closer that truly immersive experience that many in this format seek IMO.
Not sure how many players use them. I recall Kevin saying long ago that he uses them all the time.

The thought scares me away. I'd need practice. I was always more of a mouse guy...

It's good to admit one's faults.
You do seem a bit mousey.

We'll use the point and click method first and see how things go. Although, if a player is only giving orders to the cavalry brigade commander, using the courier order system is pretty easy. You'd probably only be giving 2 or 3 orders anyway.

It is extremly difficult to command a battalion or squadron with the courier system in a combat situation. I use it a lot at brigade/battery level.

I agree. For battalion or squadron movements, I use point and click too. For brigades and divisions, I use couriers.Pepe wrote:It is extremly difficult to command a battalion or squadron with the courier system in a combat situation. I use it a lot at brigade/battery level.

enlighten a noob like me please: "I use the courier system" - all orders are relayed by couriers - so what are we talking about?
anything that makes it more realistic is something I want to learn....

From the "Couriers" screen in-game, select "Orders" from the choices (instead of "Free Text" which we use to communicate with other humans). This brings up a series of menus (many with sub-menus) you can use to command your units at all levels.
For more detail, check out the SoW Manual (on my version the courier info begins on page 62).
