Windows 8.1 Multiplayer Empty Windows 8.1 Multiplayer

Post  Father General Tue Feb 24, 2015 1:51 am

I have a new computer and a new install of SOW. I'm all patched up and ready to go.

Unfortunately, Windows 8.1 isn't. I understand this is a known issue? Multiplayer crash after several minutes. Various compatibility modes do nothing.

I am able to play all day, single player, but multiplayer is denied.

It's not the same losing my men to the AI.

Check this out Neal, Wales,SJDI and I figured these things out with SJDI, SJDI has done some other things too and he plays all the time with no crash.

We also found that running your video card in performance mode instead of quality helped too. Make sure you turn off anisotropic filtering too. It is good that you have an Nvidia card then are fairly easy to change.

If you need more some help let me know

Morsey, the only proposed solution in that thread is to run SOW in compatibility mode, a solution which I have already tried.

I'll see if the graphics changes do anything.

I did notice that the advice was to select the compatibility mode from the executable and not the shortcut.

It appears, for me, that changing one also changes the other. Nonetheless, I manually went through the process to ensure both were set to XP SP 3.

I'll need to test this out later, perhaps today if I can find the time. Unfortunately I have a day filled with meetings, so I need to be AFK for a good portion.

I also noticed some of the maps, such as Pea Ridge (No Fog) produce crashes as soon as I try to open the map in single player. Frankly, that's a minor issue for me at this point.

That said, the new maps are absolutely gorgeous! I hope NSD took notes as they work on Waterloo.

You know you can play multi-player alone? Just go into the MP lobby, create a room and then start a game. This should test out the software, you don't need another person for online play via NSDs server.

I did not know that.

I can strip down to my underwear, but my house doesn't have a basement and I don't have any Hot Pockets... Not sure if I can do the alone thing.

(Thanks for the continued assistance, I'll give it a try and report.)

I don't run an AV. I just stay away from questionable content on the internet, seems to work just as well.

Although, some of the free file sharing sites where I get the SOW mods look pretty scary.

Am testing within the next few minutes.

I ran a test game in MP and it worked. The next thing will be to try different maps and with other people, I think. So far so good!

Works well after further tests with various scenarios and maps.

I'm hanging out in the lobby for a short bit to test with anyone who wants to join.

I may get on GCM for a game. I'm starved for some human vs. human combat. It isn't as satisfying to just lose to the AI all the time. :-)

If my connection holds, then I can look forward to some regular KS games once again.

The problematic router was replaced today so I should have a much better and faster connection. Also, I can host like a champ now.

There is usually a few of us on during the day. Was working with a guy that has WIN 8 yesterday. I should be on today or if you see Wales or SJDI(He has WIN8 and plays all the time no problems), they can help too.
